چکیده

Pericardial fat volume (PFV) is emerging as an important parameter for cardiovascular risk stratification. We propose a hybrid multi-atlas and graph-based segmentation approach for automated PFV quantification from water/fat-resolved whole-heart “needlefree” non-contrast coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). We validated the quantification results on 6 subjects and compared them with manual quantifications by an expert reader. The PFV quantified by our algorithm was 62.78± 27.85 cm3 compared to 58.66± 27.05 cm3 by the expert, which were not significantly different (p = 0.47, mean percent difference 9.6 ± 9.5%) and showed excellent correlation (R = 0.89, p < 0.01). The mean Dice coefficient of pericardial fat voxels was 0.82±0.06 (median 0.85). Using our approach, physicians can accurately quantify patients’ pericardial fat volume from MRI without tedious manual tracing. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an automated algorithm for PFV from whole-heart, non-contrast coronary MRA images. c © 2015. The copyright of this document resides with its authors. Automated pericardial fat quantification from coronary magnetic resonance angiography: feasibility study.

Pericardial fat volume (PFV) is emerging as an important parameter for cardiovascular risk stratification. We propose a hybrid approach for automated PFV quantification from water/fat-resolved whole-heart noncontrast coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Ten coronary MRA datasets were acquired. Image reconstruction and phase-based water-fat separation were conducted offline. Our propos...

Automated Quantitative Analysis of Cardiac Medical Images

OF THE DISSERTATION Automated Quantitative Analysis of Cardiac Medical Images by Xiaowei Ding Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Demetri Terzopoulos, Chair Clinical medicine often demands the quantitative analysis of medical images. This has traditionally been accomplished through the careful manual tracing and labeling of imaged anato...

Automated coronary artery tracking in contrast-enhanced whole-heart coronary magnetic resonance angiography at 3.0T

Background Contrast-enhanced whole heart coronary Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) at 3.0 Tesla (T) allows noninvasive detection of obstructive stenoses. Automated vessel segmentation and tracking of centerlines is important for quantitative measurement of stenosis, but remains challenging for coronary MRA. We aimed to develop and validate automated coronary artery segmentation from contras...

Quantification of epicardial fat volume using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

Background A growing body of data has demonstrated a direct relationship between epicardial fat volume(EFV) and cardiovascular diseases. In fact, EFV has been shown to be an independent predictor of coronary atherosclerosis and atrial fibrillation. Currently, there is no standard protocol for assessing EFV using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Quantification of peri-ventricular EFV ut...

Fat suppression for coronary MR angiography at 3T: 2 point Dixon versus Spectral Presaturation with Inversion Recovery (SPIR)

Background The coronary arteries are embedded in epicardial fat. To improve visualization in coronary MR angiography (CMRA) fat suppression techniques such as Spectral Presaturation with Inversion Recovery (SPIR) are often employed. Recently, water-fat separation using the multiecho 2 point Dixon method has gained increasing interest as it allows decomposing the MR signal into a water and fat i...
